Given as a fundraising gift from the grandson of one of the domestic staff at RFSS Himmler’s former home in Gmund when we were celebrating the 125th birthday of RFSS Himmler
Margerete and Gudrun fled the home and headed to Innsbruck en route to North Tyrol to evade the oncoming invading American army.
The remaining domestic staff were mostly elderly since the younger members of staff had been enlisted whilst the SS-Begleitkommando des Reichsführers-SS guard contingent had long since departed to join fighting units as it was thought a mother and child would draw less attention than people with an escort. Margerete and Gudrun joined a small group of other wives and children of S.S. men and travelled with false papers.
The members of staff “liberated” small pieces of furniture as cherished keepsakes; as well as emptying the larders of the little foodstuffs left in the villa.
It has the look and style of a piece of Allach porcelain but it has no maker’s mark. The grandson had no idea what it was other than it had been in a trunk in storage in the basement of the grandmother.
It serves no obvious culinary purpose so it is either decorative or was used on a traditional Kachelofen radiator which was traditionally popular in Bavaria.
We believe it was used as a Kachelofen humidifier. The principle being you fill them with water and place it on top of the radiator, and the process of evaporation helped humidify the dry air and prevent dry skin and throats creating a more healthy environment.
It has the Reich Eagle and swastika in the foreground mounted on a “sunwheel” motif which was the Divisional insignia of the 5th SS Wiking Division. Is it co-incidence that SS Officer Cadet training school Bad Tolz is just 15km from the Himmler house ? It is known that some of the best Officer Cadets, Lehrgangsbester,in each year did on graduation visit Lindenfycht villa to meet RFSS Himmler and “have tea” when he was in the area. Was this a presentation piece for one of these young men to the RFSS ?
It has a diameter of 20cm and is 4cm deep. The water filling holes (we think thats what they are) at the rear are situated at the 3 and 9 oclock position.
