Hitler Builds Greater Germany (German title: Hitler baut Großdeutschland im Triumph von Königsberg nach Wien) is a 1938 National Socialist photobook produced by Heinrich Hoffmann, with a foreword by Hermann Esser. Hoffmann was Hitler’s personal photographer and one of the most important creators of the Führer cult in Nazi Germany.
What the book is about
The book was published shortly after the 1938 Anschluss (the annexation of Austria by NS Germany). Its title refers to the creation of “Greater Germany” (Großdeutschland), the NS concept of uniting ethnic Germans under one state. The subtitle, “In Triumph from Königsberg to Vienna,” reflects Hitler’s highly publicized tours across Germany and newly annexed Austria during 1938.
It contains 71 pages and 76 photographs, most taken by Hoffmann, showing:
- Hitler’s travels through Germany and Austria.
- Huge crowds greeting him.
- Nazi leaders and officials accompanying him.
- Political rallies, parades, and public ceremonies.
- The plebiscite campaign that sought approval for the annexation of Austria.
