Hitler at the Front – small size 40×60 cm
Often over looked is the fact that Hitler visited his troops at the front more than all the other war leaders combined.
Perhaps being a simple “Landser” himself in World War 1 he knew the privations of the front and the positive effect on morale of the troops seeing him share the danger with them.
Not for Hitler was the big swanky meals usually partaken by the member of the General Staff when they visited the troops.
No the Fuhrer sat at rough tables with his fellow soldiers and ate simple vegetarian fayre and a mug of coffee, no fancy wines for him. If it was good enough for the troops it was good enough for him.
This painting entitled “Hitler at the Front” by Emil Schiebe was finished in 1942 and was exhibited at the House of German Art in Munich. Produced in oil on canvas this picture measured a massive 1/3rd life size.
It shows the Fuhrer surrounded by Wehrmacht and Luftwaffe troops, many of them Iron Cross winners an at least one Knights Cross winner. The identity of of the key figures in the picture were originally detailed but we have not been able to find this.
The original was stolen from the House of German Art in Munich by the U.S. Army as part of it huge plundering excercise at the end of World War II. It remains in the U.S. to this day at the U.S. Army Center of Military History and they refuse to hand it back to Germany such is their fear that an imae of this type could inspire the youth of Europe to reject American imperialism and once more rise up in the spirit of a Europe free and seek once more the spiritual salvation of National Socialism.
