Feldherrnhalle: Forgotten Elite – The Panzerkorps Feldherrnhalle and Antecedent Formations, Eastern and Other Fronts, 1942-43 (Stahlhelm S.)
The best (English language) book on this subject. The unit is an obscure one to many readers, yet there is no doubting this was an elite unit in the vein of the better known Grossdeutschland and Hermann Goring units. Like them the FHH recruited throughout the Reich and was raised from a small unit to Korps size by the end of the war. Effectively destroyed twice over, the units of the FHH nevertheless performed well wherever they served, often against great odds. The author has done a remarkable job to bring this unit to life. He was researching this book in the 1980’s when many veterans were still alive. The contributions of the veterans have been a great asset to this book. Think of elite German Forces in WW2 and most people think of the SS, however the Wehrmacht fielded the Feldherrnhalle Division which was the elite of the elite. Named in memory of the Munich War Memorial which was paramount in Nazi Mythology this book recounts the heroism and sacrifice of a mistakenly overlooked and forgotten part of the German Armed Forces in WW2.The best (English language) book on this subject.
